Make Waves with an Awards Ceremony at the National Maritime Museum

The phrase ‘not all heroes wear capes’ has always been true, but it feels more relevant now than ever. So, if you’re waiting to celebrate the heroes in your life with a glitzy awards ceremony, now’s the time to start planning!

To help you on your way, we’ve delved into one of our favourite awards ceremony venues in London – the National Maritime Museum. Steeped in British naval history (and situated in the heart of a UNESCO World Heritage Site), an awards ceremony here is sure to rock the boat in the best way possible!

Here are 4 reasons why it’s the perfect awards ceremony venue.

1. A rich history

If you want your awards ceremony to go down in history, the National Maritime Museum is the ideal place for it. Not least because it’s situated in the heart of the Maritime Greenwich UNESCO World Heritage Site – an area that’s been dedicated to astronomical research and Royal Naval education since as early as the 17th century!

The idea for the National Maritime Museum as we know it dates back to 1927 when a public appeal was launched by the Society for Nautical Research to develop a ‘national naval and nautical museum’. It took ten years to get it ready, but it was eventually opened by King George VI in April 1937. And the wait was certainly worth it!

2. Intriguing exhibits and collections

The National Maritime Museum now boasts the most impressive and important collection on Britain’s history at sea – from maritime art to manuscripts and ship models. And what better way to start off your awards ceremony than with arrival drinks surrounded by some of these national treasures?!

Whether you’re a keen sailor or just in it for the canapes, there are some seriously cool artefacts that are sure to catch any guest’s imagination and stay with them long after your event has become a distant memory (especially once there’s a glass of bubbly in tow!).

3. A red-carpet-worthy location

We all know how important location is when you’re picking the perfect event venue. And the National Maritime Museum’s home turf ticks every box (as you might expect from a world-famous UNESCO World Heritage Site!). Not only is the site’s unique architecture simply breathtaking, but the museum is also flanked by the beautiful Greenwich Park on one side and the River Thames on the other.

And that’s not all. Greenwich is home to some of the capital’s best independent bars, cafes and boutiques, perfect for those who want to make a day of it. Plus, it can be reached by train, DLR, bus and even boat! So no matter where your guest list is coming from, this destination is sure to live up to expectations.

4. Jaw-dropping event spaces

The National Maritime Museum has no shortage of amazing event spaces, but there are none quite like the Great Map when it comes to awards ceremonies. This atrium-style space can accommodate 580 dining or 1000 standing and is the perfect balance between old and new. We’re talking a stunning full glass roof (there’s nothing quite like gazing up at the stars after pudding!) as well as impressive statues and gorgeous period architecture to admire on all four sides.

Not only that, but guests can take the opportunity to add on visits to the museum’s engaging galleries as part of the experience, or even take toasts outside under the historic colonnades on a warm summer’s evening. In short, wherever you turn within the National Maritime Museum, there’s a perfect backdrop for the awards ceremony of the decade.
