Unique Venue of the Month: Motel

Under a Victorian railway arch, just steps from Kingsland Road, lies a studio that's the brainchild of famed photographer and filmmaker John Wright, who's worked with such big-name clients as Vanity Fair, Louis Vuitton and Sky Arts, and captured the biggest pop cultural names on camera including Rihanna, Paul McCartney and Arnold Schwarzenegger. GQ Britain's James Mullinger called the space the "best photographer's studio in London".

A Studio

This is Motel: a boutique photo and film studio that's lent its industrial charm and prime location – the creative hub of Shoreditch – to projects spanning the artistic spectrum, from music videos and feature films to fashion shoots and pop-up dining experiences. Moreover, over the past 12 to 18 months, the 2,500-square-foot space has been a prime venue for a broad range of private events in both business and social capacities, including birthday parties, product launches, live gigs, art exhibitions and even weddings.

The reason for Motel's popularity is that it's not only an event space, but appeals further due to its service, represented by an experienced and helpful team that assists along every step of the process – with mentions to Grace in Sales, Sam in Accounts and Gabriel for technical matters. Venue hire can also be complemented with production services across the board: lighting, set building and rental of digital and photographic equipment, all with a crew of knowledgeable technicians on hand.

The studio space – or venue space, more accurately – is supplemented by the various facilities on site. There's a lounge and kitchen for use by clients, areas for hairstyling and make-up, a remote sound system, and a car park for when navigating public transport with event equipment is hardly an option. When it is, Hoxton Overground Station is mere steps from the studio, while Old Street, Shoreditch High Street and Liverpool Street aren't much further.
